Animation Short 01

  1. When I first set out to create my short film, I decided that I wanted to convey a message that I felt strongly about saying. The first deed that needed to be done was the process that I would be using. I decided to go with a drawn animation that included numerous hand drawn sequences and real life photographed stills. I wanted the viewer to grasp the concept of the problems we are facing today in society. I believe that too much following is being done and not enough leading.
My film features a boy who wants to make an effort to change not only physically but also through his ambition. The reason I used both drawn and real images is because I wanted the viewer to experience my idea with an open mind and not visually be confined to the image of known reality.
The conflict starts when the character creates an idea (the hat) and it is then destroyed. This is followed by the character returning to reality only to give up and go back to sleep like the rest of us. This visual represents the common citizen's ambition after a spark of creative thought is ultimately destroyed by the status queue.

***NOTE: I made this video with the intention of sound. The criteria for the project asked for the film to be silent. I prefer the version with sound as a finished product.

  2. I am intrigued by the shift between photographic image and drawn animation. In this piece, we seem to shift from the actual to a dream or imaginary state. The main character holds a remote control, a symbol of control and power, yet he seems to be powerless. This is an interesting and thought-provoking piece!
